The Dine Around for MEMS Continues!!

Come for dinner with the whole family at Maxwell's Flat Road Grill on Saturday, March 27th.....Kids eat for only $5....and the school will receive 20% of the entire restaurant's meals that night! This Dine Around is sponsored by the Friends of MEMS Foundation.

There will be a 50/50 raffle; and a door prize for a future dinner for 2 at Maxwell's, one of Manchester's favorite family restaurants!

Checks from Parents to MEMS

We've been asked by our supervisory union accounting department to request that all checks be made out "Manchester Elementary School" only. Please denote specific information on the memo portion of your check, such as "lunch program", "yearbook", "field trip", "donation", etc.; and if the name on the check is different from the child who should receive credit for the payment, please note the child's first and last name also.

This will allow us to have your check credited to the correct payment area, but help us avoid the bank refusing a check because the "Pay to" designee doesn't match our "Manchester Elementary School" account. Thank you for your understanding and assistance.

A MAMMOTH Film Benefit for MEMS

On Saturday, March 20th at 6:30 p.m., the Village Picture Shows Cinema in Manchester will present a globe-spanning, modern family drama, MAMMOTH. (This film is not rated and is meant for adult audiences.) Proceeds will benefit the students at MEMS through the Friends Foundaiton for MEMS 2009-2010 Campaign.

Gael Garcia Bernal; Oscar-nominee Michelle Williams; and local actress (and MEMS fourth grader), Sophie Nyweide star in a story about the rippling effects of life's smallest choices, and the epic ironies that bind us all.

Benefit tickets are $10 and are on sale at the movie theater and the MEMS main office. This film is not rated and is meant for adult audiences.

MEMS students to display at the SVAC Art in the Schools Student Show

We had an amazing amount of outstanding artwork to choose from for the SVAC Art in the Schools Student Show this year. The judges were very impressed with the talent presented by all of our students. It was very difficult for them to choose from the variety of pieces. The following students' work will be this year's entries in the show.

This show will be on display at Southern Vermont Arts Center from March 13th-April 8th. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, March 13th from 2-4 p.m. and The Young Artists Pizza Party will be on Wednesday, March 24th from 3-6 p.m.) Everyone is invited and we hope that you all can attend.

At the Library Consortium Welcome Page, choose Manchester Elementary Middle School.

Once on this page, students in grades 3 and up should go to the top right hand tap and Login with your first and last name. Don't use any spaces and no nicknames. Your cafeteria number is your password.

Example: login: firstlastname

password: 1111

Once you login, you will see your library account. Go to the catalog page and choose the format "ebooks", then click on title. All the ebooks in the MEMS catalog will show up. Follow the directions. If you need help or want a demonstration, email Ms. Bonifanti or stop in the media center and see her.

The ebook gets checked out to you; you can read it online or download to your home computer. You cannot copy it and it will be available for the checkout period only.

Skate Program Ends - JISP Continues

Riley Rink's School Skate Program ended on Thursday, March 4th. The JISP program continues for two additional weeks and all (K-8) students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. on March 11th and March 18th. If your child has been enrolled in the School Skate Program, please send a note with your child telling us what their alternative plan will be on March 11th and March 18th.

MEMS 4th graders in exchange with Charlotte, NC School

Recently, MEMS was contacted by a student at Winget Park Elementary School in Charlotte, North Carolina to find out what the MEMS 4th graders are reading.

Winget Park 4th graders contacted schools across America to find out what other 4th graders are reading for fun, and to discover similarities and differences. The students are working on a project called Read Across America Day. They are creating a bulletin board to show what other 4th graders are reading across the country, which will be available soon on their website: www.wingetpark.com

Mrs. Bonifanti, MEMS Media Specialist, asked Mrs. Darrow, 4th grade teacher, if she could come into the 4th grade to survey the reading habits of her students. Students were surveyed and Ms. Bonifanti tabulated the list and emailed it back to the Winget Park Elementary School.

This is what she found. Students are reading a variety of genres - from humor to picture books, from suspense to realistic fiction. They even like to read information books such as the Guinness Book of World Records and Jurassic Poop.

The books that really stand out are Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Magic Tree House Series, Mathilda and The Lightning Thief.

Alana, the Winget Park 4th grader who contacted MEMS, shared a book she is reading. "I am reading Igraine the Brave. It is about a girl who wants to be a knight when she grows up. She has to fight a new neighbor who wants to steal her parents' magic books. Her parents turn themselves into pigs and she has to do it by herself. I think it would be fun to find out what your 4th grade class is reading."

It will be fun for us to check out the Winget Park website to see what 4th graders are reading across America and see if we're reading the same books!

MEMS Student Art goes to China

Rebecca Raymond, MEMS visual arts teacher, is pleased to share that MEMS student art work has been chosen through the Greater Rutland Asian Studies Project's (GRASP) student art exchange to travel to Lijiang, China. The jury of art teachers who reviewed the approximately 300 submissions from 15 schools found it very difficult to choose the 60 pieces to be displayed in China.

Congratulations to the following MEMS students whose work was selected: Andrew Reid and Bennett King in kindergarten; Kiah Mayer in Grade 1; Joe McCoy, Ethan Simonds, Lucas Morey, Aryn Iannuzzi, and Logan Morgan in Grade 2.

Please Help Us When You Send Money With Your Child!!

When you send money to MEMS via your student, we would greatly appreciate your help in making sure all money is clearly labeled so it gets credited to the proper place. For example......

If the money should go to a lunch account, please label the check or envelope with your child's name, grade and "lunch account".

If the money is a payment for a field trip, please label the check or envelope with your child's name, grade and "field trip". You can even be specific and say "Cape Cod Field Trip", "Broadway Field Trip", "Weston Opera Field Trip", etc.

If the money is a payment for ordering a yearbook, include the order form and label the check or envelope with your child's name, grade and "yearbook order".

These are just a few examples of some of the times when your child will be responsible for turning in payment for things at MEMS. Taking a few minutes to clearly label your payments ensures that everyone is clear and no one gets confused as to where to credit your money. Thank you for your understanding.

Girls on the Run Program

The Girls on the Run program will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15-4:30 p.m. starting on Tuesday, March 30th and ending with the race in Brattleboro on Saturday, May 22nd.

A Community Service event is planned for late April and participation in a Run with the Dogs on Tuesday, May 11th. Please contact Emily Beeman (MEMS Spanish teacher) for more information. Books and More Books!

A thank you to all of you who have donated books to benefit Literacy for Little Ones, an early literacy program held at MEMS every Friday morning, 8:30-10:00 a.m. Books are offered at every session, as well as to children in some local preschools. They all LOVE to get their weekly books and I have been told that just receiving a weekly book has encouraged children to want to read more! Your donated books are creating personal at-home libraries for MEMS students-to-be!

However, the book supply is running very low and more books are needed for children ages 0-4. If you have books at home that you no longer need, please consider donating them to our literacy efforts. Books may be dropped off in the MEMS main office.

Interim Studies Needs YOU!

Interim Studies has become a very successful program where all 7th and 8th graders are involved in producing a dinner theatre and a musical play. This year's presentation will be Guys and Dolls and we'd love to invite parents to get involved as well.

We're in need of chefs, bakers, costumers, set designers, builders, painters, choreographers, and anything else you might have a hidden talent for to work with our students. The students' enthusiasm is contagious and everyone catches the "theater" bug!!

Literacy for Little Ones

Our Friday morning Literacy for Little Ones program is off to a great start. From 8:30 - 10:00 on Friday mornings, Susi Garvin, the Early Literacy Outreach Coordinator hosts a fun-filled literacy experience for tots and their parents. If you have any young pre-school age children in your household, please join us. We'd also greatly appreciate it if you'd pass on this information to any Manchester families that you may know, who may not yet have students at MEMS. All students leave with some great literacy activities. Join us!

MEMS is gearing up for the production of our Spring musical.....Guys and Dolls! Our musical productions get more exciting every year! MEMS students devote many hours of hard work to make these presentations a success. We're looking forward to this year's opening night!!

The costume room is looking for donations of the following items:

old prom dresses

ladies hats, purses and clothing from the 1940's

colorful pinstripe suits, regular suits, ties, bow ties, colorful dress shirts and men's dress shoes, men's suspenders

white ladies pantyhose

Fedora's (see picture above)

an old fashioned wedding dress and veil

Red or Black Salvation army outfits (hats, a-line skirts, jackets, pants)

portable clothing racks

mink stole

Navy policeman's jacket, pants, hat, Sam Brown style belt (with badge, holster, nightstick) (1940's)
